Destinations International Announces Release of 2023 DestinationNEXT Futures Study

DALLAS, TEXAS (July 19, 2023) – Destinations International (DI), the world’s largest membership entity and resource for official destination organizations and convention and visitors bureaus (CVBs), today announced the release of the 2023 DestinationNEXT (DNEXT) Futures Study, the largest and most extensive survey of destination organizations around the world. Click here to download the report.

Over 800 destination leaders from 62 countries responded to the survey of key tourism trends and strategies. The study was prepared for DI by MMGY NextFactor and underwritten by a grant from the Destinations International Foundation.
The DestinationNEXT Futures Study provides a comprehensive overview of the most significant trends affecting both leisure tourism and business events from around the world as well as a list of key strategies leaders can implement to help ensure the success of their organizations and destinations. The report ais a key tool for any destination organization planning for the future. The 2023 Edition of the study is the fifth edition of the industry seminal report. First released in 2014, this year’s report edition marks the 10th anniversary of helping destination organizations and moving the industry forward.
“Destinations International is committed to providing our members with essential information to help their organizations and communities excel,” said Don Welsh, president and CEO of Destinations International. “The data presented in this study will help guide destination organizations around the world with a roadmap so they can serve their communities and ensure they thrive.”

"We were delighted with the global response to our survey” said Paul Ouimet, Partner/President, MMGY NextFactor. “There were some big shifts in the key trends from two years ago and new insights gained on the key roles and strategies for destination organizations."
The project was guided by a Global Advisory Group made up of leading destination organizations from around the world and completed in two phases including a comprehensive review of major industry trends and the convening of advisory panels; and the administration of a global survey.

Some of the key takeaways of the study include:

•    Artificial Intelligence (AI) is becoming increasingly prevalent and important in the tourism industry.
•    Visitors continue to look for unique, authentic experiences.
•    Destination organizations are stepping up as community leaders to help address key social and economic issues in many cities.

The results of the DNEXT Futures Study fuel the online DNEXT Assessment Tool that allows destinations to complete an objective self-assessment which can help determine priorities and strategies for the future. The tool presents a framework that destination leaders and communities can use to critically assess the destination. It also helps to start a conversation and provides focus on what needs to be done in the future.
